Bobcat Cross Country Announces Team Awards

Four 'Cats earn team's top honors

The Montana State Cross Country program announced their 2011 team award winners on Monday. Cross Country gives out a total of four awards to the Bobcat men and women. The Top Gun Award is given to the student-athlete with the lowest power score. Bobcat Cross Country also doles out the award for the Most Improved runner.

The 2011 Men's Top Gun award went to senior Seth Grossman who was MSU's frontrunner in three of his five races. Grossman, a transfer from Wyoming, will leave Montana State with two varsity letters in cross country. The Kalispell native, finished 10th at the 2011 Big Sky Championship, earning his first all-conference nod. One his most impressive performances of his career came at the Penn State National Meet back on Oct. 14, when he placed in 11th overall with a time of 26:59 in the men's 5.2 mile race.

Heather Haug was the women's recipient of the Top Gun award, having competed in four of five meets for Montana State but finishing as the Bobcats' frontrunner in each. Haug, a four-year letter winner, finished fourth at the Big Sky Championships, earning her first all-conference recognition in the sport. She also earned her first individual cross country victory at the Montana Invitational.

The 2011 Most Improved Male Runner went to Jacob Kirk, who also finished second in the power score toward the Top Gun title. Kirk, a sophomore, finished ninth at the Big Sky Championship, earning all-conference honors. In 2010, he placed 25th overall. In his second year as a Bobcat, Kirk showed major drops in several races, including an 11th place finish at the Bozeman Running Company Invitational this year, after placing 20th last season.  Kirk was the top finisher for MSU at the Montana Invitational where he placed third.

Keely West was the Most Improved on the women's side after a breakout sophomore season in Blue and Gold. While West was not able to finish the race at the NCAA Mountain Regional, she still had much to be proud of from the season. West placed an impressive seventh at the Big Sky Championships, improving 43 places from her first year. At the BRC Invitational, she placed ninth, after taking 31st her freshman season. With a 40 second drop from her first year, West also went from 30th to seventh at the Montana Invitational.

Montana State closed out the 2011 season on Nov. 12 at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championship in Provo, Utah. The Bobcat men placed 13th, while the women came in 15th
