Bobcats Begin to Hit Their Stride

MSU Cross Country opens the 2011 on their home turf

The MSU Cross Country team opened the 2011 season at the Bozeman Running Company Montana State Invitational on Saturday. Weber State won the overall Division I men's competition with 33 points, including four runners in the top ten. The Wildcats also took the women's Division I trophy to sweep the invitational with 28 points and a one-two-four finish. The Bobcat men finished third in the Division I five mile competition, with 70 points. Seth Grossman was the top finisher for MSU with a ninth place finish time of 25:12. Teammates Trevor Polson and Jacob Kirk finished immediately behind him with times of 25:16 and 25:17, respectively. Jake Turner, in his collegiate debut, clocked in with a time of 25:30, good enough for 14th place. The top time for the Division I men for the day, was recorded at 24:27 by Brian McKenna from Utah State.

The Montana State Women were led by Keely West who finished eighth in the three mile Division I race with a time of 17:38. Also finishing in the top-20 were ReBecca Sorenson (14th; 17:56), Heather Demorest (19th; 18:06), and Lauren Kuennen (20th; 18:09).

First place for the Division I women went to Amber Henry of Weber State with a time of 16:48.

In addition to the Division I scores, the meet served at the Cat-Griz dual for Montana and Montana State. The Bobcat men prevailed over the Griz, 20-35, while the women fell, 25-30.

“Our top four in each race did a great job,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “We know we need to put an emphasis on our fifth runner to really ensure some potentially great success this season.”

In the small schools division, Rocky Mountain won on the men's side with 45 points and Carroll took the victory for the women with 23 points. Both teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Montana State hits the trail again on Friday, Sept. 30th, at the Montana Invitational in Missoula at the University of Montana Golf Course.
