MSU Men Run Away With Cross Country Invite

All the goals Dale Kennedy set for Saturday's cross country meet were accomplished—except one.

Kennedy was hoping that his men's “pack” of five runners would finish within 30 seconds of each other. Four of the top five accomplished the feat, but number one runner Patrick Casey took off and won the race with a time of 24:27, five seconds ahead of Montana rival Lynn Reynolds and over 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the MSU pack.

The hotly contested rivalry between the two caused Casey to put the pedal down and lose the rest of the MSU pack late in the race. Casey finished just over 30 seconds ahead of the nearest teammate, Nick Atwood, who finished at 25:02 in third place overall. Casey's winning time also improved his time from 2009 by over 30 seconds.

MSU men won the team portion of the event with 21 points, with the top five point placers in first, third, fourth, five and eighth place. The next nearest school was the College of Idaho with 43 placing points. Teams add up the top five places of their runners for a total score with lowest score winning the team event.

“Our chase pack did a real good job on both sides—men and women,” Kennedy said. “Our women especially improved as a group significantly from last week.”

Sophmore Rebecca Sorenson led the MSU women at the race finishing 16th with a time of 18:48, a time Kennedy recalled as her best ever. The MSU women finished fifth of seven teams. Katrina Drennen of Montana won the race on the women's side and the Grizzly women finished first.
