Bobcats Shine at Blue & Gold Intrasquad Meet

Despite the fact it is still 2011; the Montana State Track and Field team had their 2012 season soft opening on Saturday at the Blue and Gold Intrasquad Meet in Worthington Arena. (Results)

The Blue Team prevailed in the women's scoring by a score of 79-63 over the Gold. In the men's race, the Gold team defeated the Blue, 74-62.

Although results will not count toward any Big Sky Conference qualification standards, six women earned would-be qualifiers, while the men had 11 men pick up 13 qualifying performances.

Veteran Asa Staven, who redshirted the 2011 indoor season, had three victories, taking gold in the high jump, long jump and pole vault. Chris Wilson was also a multiple winner, crossing the finish line first in the 55 and the 200 dashes.

One of the most impressive performances of the day came from Emily Tyrell, who finished second in the mixed javelin throw with a distance of 51.20 meters (168-00). Her throw marks an unofficial Olympic trials “B” qualifier.

Newcomer Chantel Jaeger won three of her events- the 55, 400 and the 200. Her time of 24.99 in the 200 marks the fastest women's time in program history on the flat track of Worthington Arena.

“This meet gave us a great opportunity to see where we are early in the season,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “Obviously, there's a long road of meets ahead but it was helpful to just get out there and compete, even if just within the program.”

Montana State Track and Field opens the 2012 slate on Monday, Jan. 9, when they host the MSU Combined Events Invitational.
