Local standout keeps Bobcat lineage in the family

The Montana State Track and Field team announced the signing of Kevin Close to a National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic career with the Bobcats.

Close, a local standout, is a 2011 graduate of Bozeman High School, where he earned four letters in track and field and two in football. As a Hawk, Close was most recently the Class AA state champion in the 200 and runner-up in the 400. He also helped Bozeman finish second in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays at the state meet.

Prior to his senior season, Close primarily competed in the triple jump. As a sophomore, he was the Montana state runner-up. He was an all-state selection in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

His personal best in the 200 clocked in at 22.16, while his best in the 400 is 49.50. In the triple jump, he leapt to a distance of 44-06.

In football, he was a member of the 2010 Class AA state championship squad.

Close comes to MSU as part of a family of Bobcats. Close's sister, Mandy is currently an assistant coach for MSU Women's Basketball. His parents, who both attended MSU, are members of the Bobcat Hall of Fame for their athletic efforts in Blue and Gold. His father, John, was a member of the 1976 National Championship football team and was inducted in 1988. Kathy, his mother, ran track and field and cross country for the Bobcats where she ran for head coach Dale Kennedy.

“We are clearly very excited to have Kevin join the Bobcat family,” said Kennedy. “He comes from a talented family and we look forward to his contributions in the sprints and jumps.”
