Mohl edged out for Big Sky title in decathlon

After a day of six personal records, Jeff Mohl took second in the decathlon at the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The sophomore finished with silver with a personal best 7,371 points, just seven points shy of first place, behind Sam Schur of Sacramento State. (Multis Results)

Mohl was at the top of the leaderboard after day one and in true championship meet fashion, the Big Sky title came down to the final event. Mohl finished third with a PR time of 4:34.98, 3.98 seconds short of the decathlon title.

“I had a great first day” said Mohl. “I had a rough start in the first two events today and it just came down to the last event. I'm still excited about what I accomplished this year compared to last with so many PR's. That is still something to be proud about.”

The Red Lodge, Mont. native's overall score was about 400 points better than his previous best. He also set new bests in the high jump, pole vault, long jump, 100, 400 and 1,500.

Junior Asa Staven finished in fourth place with 6,993 points, including a first place in the decathlon pole vault.

In the women's heptathlon, Sarah McGree took sixth with 4,753 points, while Carley McCutchen ended her first Big Sky heptathlon in ninth with 4,424.

“This is a nice start for the team,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “We obviously have a busy few days ahead of us but this group really set the tone for what we're capable of here in Sacramento.”

With the multis over, the MSU men enter the remainder of the track and field events in first place with 13 points, while the women sit in sixth with three points. The third day of events begins tomorrow, Friday, May 13, at 1:00 p.m. with the men's hammer throw.
