Series of Second Places Sets Pace at Pelluer

Montana State competed at the 40th Annual Pelluer Invitational in Cheney, Wash. on Friday. With time running out to qualify for the Big Sky Championships, MSU capitalized on the chance and had two men and two women earn their much needed marks.

Carley McCutchen made her Big Sky mark in the high jump with a height of 5-05.00 (1.65m). McCutchen's height was also a lifetime best and good enough for second place in the meet.

Kristen Demorest also qualified in the 10,000 after clocking in faster than 19:00.00 in the 5,000.

For the men, Seth Garbett clocked in at 9:34.12 in the 3,000 steeplechase to land him a place in the conference meet. Garbett also finished first in the steeplechase, with teammate Tyler Noland in second (9:48.18).

Rounding out the new qualifiers in Cheney, Wash., was Carl Nystuen, who finished the 5,000 in 14:45. His time in the 5,000 also allows him to compete in the 10,000.

Other notable performances include the men's 200 which was swept by the Bobcats. Gage Pickering took first (22.68), John McDonald in second (22.70) and Nick Melone in third (22.82). Melone also took second in the 400 with a time of 49.83.

Also in the sprints, Olivia Rider crossed the finish line in 25.36 in the 200, good enough for second place. Lierin Flanagan also earned a silver for herself in the 400 with a time of 57.84.

Emily Willmuth took yet another silver medal for the Blue and Gold in the hammer throw. Her hurl of 166-11.00 (50.87m) marks a season best, as well.

MSU closes out the weekend when they participate in the Duane Hartman Invitational in Spokane, Wash. on Saturday and the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. on Sunday, May 1.
