Big Sky TAF Preview

Men's Track and Field Leslie Masterpaul

Poised for Pocatello

The Montana State Track & Field teams are ready to jockey for a top spot in the Big Sky. Coming into the 2011 Indoor season, the Bobcat men were picked to finish fourth in the conference and the women, fifth. What's happened so far this season is telling another story. They're prepped for the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships and ready to make their point.

Montana State is sending 20 men and 18 women to the two-day meet being held in Holt Arena at Idaho State. The 38 student-athletes will compete in 31 events. The women have 13 entries ranked in the top-five of their respective events. MSU Men have 18 entries among the top-five of events.

Live results will be available throughout the meet and can be found here.

Leading way for MSU is Patrick Casey who will compete in the Mile Run, 800 Meter Run, the Distance Medley Relay and the 4x400 Relay. Casey comes into the BSC Championships ranked first in the Mile and the 800. Casey has already qualified for the NCAA Indoor National Championships in the Mile and the 800. He will seek to defend his Mile title from 2010.

Jeff Mohl, an integral part of the dual meet success for Montana State, will compete in several events for the Blue and Gold. He will compete in the Heptathlon and comes into the meet ranked third in the conference. Mohl will also look to shine in the Pole Vault, Long Jump and the 60 Meter Hurdles.

The Men's Throws trio of Trevor Gilreath, Morgan Norgaard and David Phillips will look to cap their tremendous indoor season with Big Sky titles in the Weight Throw and Shot Put. The Bobcat triumvirate is currently ranked 1-2-3 in the Shot Put while Phillips is first in the Weight Throw.

In the women's competition, Camille Marchand will seek a fourth week of winning ways in the 60 Meter Dash and the 200. She heads into the weekend with the second fastest time in the 60 and the fourth fastest in the 200. Marchand finished with a silver medal last year in the 55 Meter Dash.

The distance events will feature Heather Haug who will try to defend her title in the Mile. She will also compete in the 800.

Both the men's and women's relays will be pivotal in the team scoring. Casey will be running the 1,200-leg of the DMR and will anchor the men's 4x400. The Bobcat men are seeded first the DMR. The Women's DMR is seeded fourth. The men's 4x400 is tied for second with Weber State, while the women are in third headed into the meet.

“We have the potential to win the team championship,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “If we do what we're expected to do, we will have a lot of success this weekend.”

The meet begins Friday, Feb. 25, at 9:30 a.m. commencing with the Heptathlon and ends Saturday evening, Feb. 26, at the conclusion of the Men's Triple Jump and 4x400 Meter Relay finals.
