Montana State stays strong at Bozeman Running Co. Invite

Montana State Track and Field hosted the Bozeman Running Company Invitational at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse on Friday. MSU hosted Montana and Weber State in the double dual scored meet. The Bobcat men swept the competition by defeating Montana, 89-56, and Weber State, 75-68.  Montana women rallied from the previous week to defeat Montana , 88-56, and also topped Weber State, 79-65. Coming into Friday's meet, the Blue and Gold had already amassed 28 Big Sky Conference (BSC) Indoor Championships qualifying performances and improved on several of those previous qualifiers.  On the night, the Bobcats earned 35 total medals (18 for men, 17 for women), including 11 first place finishes.
Similar to the week before, Patrick Casey put out an impressive performance in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 1:47.67. His time marks a new MSU record, a field house record and an NCAA Indoor Championships automatic qualifier, his second in as many weeks.
The Bobcat men's throwers kept up their hot streak taking another 1-2-3 finish in the Shot Put. David Phillips led the MSU brigade with a 16.12m throw, followed by Morgan Norgaard at 16.11, and Trevor Gilreath with a 16.01m throw. Phillips, for his second gold medal, won the Weight Throw (18.55m) while Norgaard took third (16.51m).
Gage Pickering and Chris Wilson took second and third, respectively in the 55 Meter Dash. In the 55 Meter Hurdles, the Bobcats took a 1-2 finish with Slater Powell in first place (7.61) and Jeff Mohl in second (7.80). Adam Hutter won the Long Jump with a distance of 7.03m and also took the High Jump with a height of 2.01m. In the 3,000 Meter Run, Carl Nystuen improved on his time and crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 8:41.08.
MSU men runners closed out the night with a neck-and-neck finish with Weber State in the 4x400 Meter Relayand fell just short, being edged by the Wildcats.
The women throwers also put out a strong showing, finishing first and third in the Weight Throw. Kirstin Lee earned first place (15.91) and classmate Emily Willmuth took the bronze with a season's best 14.46m.
In the Mile Run, Heather Haug earned her first of two medals on the night crossing the finish line in second place at 4:51.45. Sophomore Heather Demorest bested her previous time and clocked in at 5:14.83 and a bronze medal.
Other strong performances for the women included Stacey Irvine in the Pole Vault, a first place and season best height of 3.82m. Camille Marchand had her second consecutive week of double-golds in the 55 (7.13) and the 200 (24.66), of which both were top times in 2011 for the Pocatello, Idaho native.  The Shot Put also garnered two more medals for MSU from Loni Havlovick, who finished second with a distance of 12.32m and Amy Ostermiller, who took third with 12.32m.
For her second medal, Haug came from behind to win the 800 Meter with a season best time of 2:17.07. Freshman Lierin Flanagan finished right at her heels for second place at 2:17.34.
The Bobcat women closed out the night with a second place finish in the 4x400 Meter Relay (Katie Niemeir – Madeline Fuchs – Marissa Stanton – Flanagan) and a season best time of 3:49.84.
“This was another great meet for us,” Kennedy said. “The kids really stepped up in a lot of places and competed.”
Montana State Track and Field hosts their final home meet of the 2011 indoor season next Friday, Feb. 18. The Bobcat Open is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. in Worthington Arena.
