Mountain States Games Preview

Montana State Indoor Track and Field will compete at the Mountain States Games on Friday, Jan. 28, and Saturday, Jan. 29, hosted by Idaho State. The two-day event, held in Holt Arena will feature teams from Montana, Sacramento State, MSU-Billings, Southern Utah, Utah, Utah Valley and Weber State.
Meet results will be available through Idaho State's live results webpage.

The Bobcats are coming off a strong showing at the MSU Open last weekend (Jan. 21), which included 20 Big Sky Conference Championships automatic qualifiers.

Sophomore Patrick Casey enters the meet ranked first in the Big Sky Conference (BSC)in the 3,000 Meter Run (8:12.51), which is also good enough for a 17th place tab in the NCAA. Casey will look to defend his 2010 title in the Mile Run and will debut in the 800 in Pocatello. Sophomore Jeff Mohl, who boasted three personal bests at the MSU open, will also look to up his rank in the Heptathlon (16th). In the sprint events, the Bobcats look to Slater Powell, currently ranked second in the 60 Meter Hurdles, to make a mark for MSU.

“While we aren't where we were last year in terms of qualifiers, we're definitely headed in the right direction,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “This meet provides us an excellent opportunity to do so.”

Distance standout Heather Haug, after a phenomenal performance at the MSU open, will compete in the Mile Run, which she won a year ago at the Big Sky Championships.  Montana State will also have a presence in the High Jump with freshman Amber Amsbaugh and junior Jessica Greany, currently tied for second in the BSC (1.67m). Sarah McGree and Sadie McMillan, ranked second and third, respectively, in the conference in the Pentathlon, should also be competitive at the meet. McGree is ranked 16th in the NCAA.

“This meet serves as a mini-conference tune-up,” Kennedy said. “Our performance in Pocatello this weekend should be a good gauge of our progress.”
