Adams and Thornton Named Prestigious Big Sky Scholar-Athletes

Montana State senior student-athletes Jamie Thornton and Matt Adams have earned Big Sky Scholar-Athlete Awards for 2009-10, the conference announced this week.


Montana State senior student-athletes Jamie Thornton and Matt Adams have earned Big Sky Scholar-Athlete Awards for 2009-10, the conference announced this week.

A women's basketball player from Pullman, Wash., #Thornton# maintained a 3.96 grade point average in mathematics throughout her Bobcat career. She earned her program's Bobcat Pride Award, a Montana State University Award of Excellence as one of the top 40 senior students on campus, initiated a recycling program in Brick Breeden Fieldhouse, and served as president of MSU's SAAC (student-athlete advisory committee). Thornton battled injury throughout her career, but played in 20 games as a senior and started five. Thornton plans to work on her master's degree at MSU and coach in the women's program next year.

#Adams#, who graduated in environmental sciences last month, was an Academic All-America District 7 choice, earning All-Big Sky honors in cross country and outdoor track and field (3,000 m steeple chase). He qualified for this year's NCAA Midwest Regionals, and stands fifth on MSU's all-time records list in the steeple chase. Originally from Seward, Alaska, Adams maintained a 3.94 grade point average at MSU and is a multiple-time academic all-conference selection.
