Kennedy Announces Outdoor Track and Field Awards

Head track and field coach Dale Kennedy announced the individual team awards for the 2010 outdoor season. The awards are based on a point system for achievements during the season.

Outstanding Field Event Performer for the men went to Pat Eckerson who placed second at the Big Sky Conference meet and gained all-conference in the men's hammer throw. Eckerson was also all-conference during the indoor season. The Outstanding Field Event Performer for the women went to junior Emily Tyrrell who achieved All-America status in the javelin throw, setting a new school record of 170-9 in the process.

Outstanding Track Performer for the men went to Matt Adams. Adams placed 5th at the BSC meet in the steeple chase and 4th in the 5000. He was also nominated as a first team CoSIDA Academic All American from District VII. The Outstanding Track Performer on the women's side went to Heather Haug who was the conference champion in the 1500. She was a conference champ during indoor in the mile run as well. She has a school record in the 1500 at 4:22.86

The Most Improved Award will be split by four athletes: Willie Sullivan, Heather Haug, Camille Marchand, and Stacey Irvine

"All these kids really improved a lot and the coaches just couldn't pick one out of the bunch that out-performed the others," Kennedy said. "There was so much improvement all around that they all deserved it."

Sullivan is a javelin thrower whose season best performance improved from 176-09 in 2009 to 210-9 in 2010. Haug cut 11 seconds off her 1500 time since 2009. Stacey Irvine went from a best of 12-15.9 in the pole vault to 13-5.10. All four will be returning next year.

Freshman of the Year awards went to Jeff Mohl and Madeline Fuchs. Mohl was a qualifier in the Junior Nationals in the decathlon this season and Fuchs placed 7th in the BSC outdoor in the 400 meter hurdles as a freshman.

"Both these kids have potential to really be impactful for our program in the future," Kennedy said. "They're really off to a good start in their collegiate careers."

The Top Gun Award goes to the male and female who accumulate the most individual points in various categories throughout the season. This year's Top Gun Male is Nick Puckett and the Top Gun Female went to Heather Haug. Puckett, a 400 meter specialist, racked up 73 points to the nearest 61 points and Haug gained 72 points over the nearest female at 68.5.

In addition, the team members pick two "Teammates of the Year" each season. This season's honors went to Heather Haug and pole vaulter Bobby Biskupiak.
