Tyrrell Ready to Tackle the NCAA Meet

She's been there before. But this time, she won't be intimidated by her surroundings or her competitors.

Junior Emily Tyrrell will be competing in her second NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship this Saturday in Eugene, Oregon. After a rocky mid-section of the season, she has found her stroke and had her two season best throws in her last two meets. She threw 170-9 at the regional meet in Austin, Texas two weeks ago, breaking her own MSU school record.

"I feel really good right now," Tyrrell said. "I have confidence coming out of the conference and regionals with pretty good throws."

She says it helps to have been there before.

"Last year was my first year, and for some reason I just didn't feel like I belonged there and I kind of psyched myself out," Tyrrell said. "This year I've thrown against most of the people there and I really feel like I belong and can compete."

Tyrrell is ranked eighth in the nation at this time, but she has the third best throw in the country coming out of the regional meets last week. The top eight finishers in the event will receive All-America awards.

"I think Emily is ready to throw," javelin coach Jorah Griffith said. "Just in the last three weeks, technically speaking, she has been doing things that she had never come close to before. I am really excited to see her throw this weekend."

The preliminaries for the women's javelin are at 10:30 a.m. MST on Saturday with the finals following.
