Heather Haug Wins Championship in Women's 1500

Women finish seventh; men finish eighth

Montana State head track and field coach Dale Kennedy will say there were some highlights and some disappointments at this year's outdoor conference championships.

"Certainly we had some kids that had just great performances, some lifetime bests, some season's best and some great performances," Kennedy said. "But we fell a little short of our team goals on both sides."

The MSU men finished eighth of nine teams at the meet and the women finished seventh. Kennedy had thought the women might finish as high as third.

"Our women didn't do as they hoped," he said. "But other teams had kids that stepped up and if you don't respond to that and do the same, this can happen."

Some highlights from both days:

Saturday:

MSU's Heather Haug became the first conference champion for the Bobcats at the 2010 Big Sky Conference Championships in Ogden winning the women's 1500 in a race that was reminiscent of Haug's mile win at the indoor championships in Bozeman.
Haug ran a 4:28.46 (non-adjusted) to set a new Hislop Track record, previously set by Holly Stanish of MSU in 1998.
In the last 200 meters of the race, Haug pushed to pass Montana's Katrina Drennen and win the race.
“That's really the way I wanted to run the race,” Haug said. “But the pace of the race was faster than I thought. It took more perseverance earlier in the race to stay in a position to win.”

Senior Dustin Cichosz placed third in the triple jump marking the second all-conference honor of his senior season, having won the event in the indoor. This was Cichosz's last conference meet as a collegiate.

"I really wanted to win, but you can't be great everyday, even when you try," Cichosz said. "I got a medal and I'm real happy about that.

Kris Schaffer finished second in the women's shot put with a season best throw of 49-04.5. Schaffer will be one of several Bobcats who advance to the regional meet next week in Austin, Texas. Those entries will be announced on Monday.

Jessie Greany got all-conference honors finishing second in the women's high jump clearing 5-07. Greany placed fifth in the event at the indoor championships in Bozeman.
Stacey Irvine placed second in the women's pole vault with a season best leap of 12-10.75. Irvine was beat by Sacramento State's Elizabeth Norvell who cleared 13-02.75.
Camille Marchand finished fourth in a fast women's 100 with a time of 12.05.
Pat Eckerson finished second in the men's hammer Saturday morning to garner the first all-conference medal for MSU at this year's championships in Ogden, Utah. Eckerson threw 190-02 in the first field event of the day.

Senior Matt Adams took fifth in the steeple chase, the first track event of the day. Due to lightning and heavy rain, the start of several field events was postponed for about an hour. Following Adams, Heather Haug placed fourth in the women's steeple chase, breaking from a pack of four runners at the end of the race.

In the women's hammer throw, senior Allison Jones placed fifth in the event with a throw of 172-8. Emily Willmuth finished second with a throw of 163-02.75.
