Montana State head track and field coach Dale Kennedy issued two challenges to his men's and women's teams for this weekend's Big Sky Conference Track and Field Championships in Ogden, Utah.
“I've asked two things of them,” Kennedy said. “Get a personal best mark and score more points as a team than we have going in on paper.”
Kennedy does what he calls a “power scoring” of the meet which predicts where MSU's teams will place based on the individual standings in each event to this date. He says the women should be in the running for third and the men will be fighting to keep out of the bottom.
The men's team is somewhat depleted this season because Kennedy redshirted a large number of men hoping to push for a conference championship next year.
“We've got some men and some women that are pushing for a conference championship. Emily Tyrrell is the leading javelin thrower in the conference to date,” Kennedy said. “Dustin Cichosz won the triple jump at the indoor meet, and he has his sights set on the same for the outdoor.”
“There is going to be some real competition there,” Tyrrell said. “I might have the best performance to now, but there are some others on that list that are capable of throwing far. I try not to think about the standings going into the event. I just need to throw my best.”
Tyrrell is currently sitting 13th on the regional performance list. She needs to be in the top 12 in the west region to qualify for the national meet so she is looking to do well in this weekend's meet.
MSU qualified a full roster of 25 for the meet on the women's side and qualified 17 men. The multi event portion of the conference meet began Wednesday and the full individual events start Friday and run until Saturday.
