It rained, it snowed, it hailed, it blew, and there was even some graupel. At an event where the weather was the main attraction, Montana State fell to Montana in a scored dual track and field meet on both the men's and women's side.
"The meet was actually closer than we had predicted on paper going in," head coach
Dale Kennedy said. "I am really proud of the way our kids competed on a day where we saw every kind of bad weather imaginable."
The men were outscored by Montana 110-79, but the women's dual was tied 90-90 going into the last two events of the meet. MSU's women took third and fourth in the 1500 and second in the final relay of the day (conducted in a blizzard) to lose the meet 103-96.
Despite the lopsided 31-point win by Montana's men, several MSU men had season best performances. Sophomore Nick Puckett had a SB performances in the 200 and 400. Puckett's 400 mark puts him fifth currently in the Big Sky Conference. Morgan Norgaard, who had already qualified for the conference meet in the shot put, threw a conference qualifying mark in the hammer throw. Senior Dustin Cichosz, the current conference indoor triple jump champ, jumped a season best 46'5.5" in the triple that ranks him third currently in the BSC. Senior Ben Soukup had two SB marks in the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Willie Sullivan threw a SB in the javelin, placing second. The men's discus throw was cancelled due to weather.
On the women's side, MSU javelin throwers took first and second. Emily Tyrrell's winning throw was seven feet short of her season best. She is currently ranked first in the BSC. Allison Jones and Emily Willmuth went first and second in the women's hammer throw with Jones' winning throw being a season best at 176'6". MSU women continued their dominance in the pole vault event with Stacey Irvine, the conference leader, Rebekka Chambers and Mary Vaughan going one-two-three. Freshman Katie Niemeir turned in a season best in the 100-meter hurdles. Seniors Kris Schaffer and Alli Jones went one-three in the women's shot put. Sophomore sprinter Camille Marchand had victories in the 100 and 200. Her season best mark in the 200 moves her to sixth on the BSC list to date. Junior Morgan Dunley ran a SB in the 800-meter run.
The Bobcats have one more meet at Missoula next weekend before the conference championships in Ogden, Utah May 12-15.
