Montana State track and field runner Patrick Casey won the mile at the Alex Wilson Last Chance Invite at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana Saturday. Despite running a 4:00.19 in the event, it appears Casey will not qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships next week. Going into the meet, Casey was ranked 12th in the nation, which would have given him the bid. After all of Saturday's last chance meets, he fell to 16th. There is still an outside chance he could be in the top 12.
“Some of these guys qualify in the mile and the 800 and run a leg in the distance medley,” head coach Dale Kennedy said. “They have to make some choices tomorrow and we'll find out on Monday if there's a chance he did get in.”
Kennedy said the field for the national championships is settled on Monday night.
Nick Atwood placed fourth in the 3000 at the same meet with a time of 8:05.60. He came into the meet with a better time that placed him 37th in the nation. Only the top 12 twelve qualify.
“We are proud of the seasons that both these guys have had,” Kennedy said. “They both have done a great job representing their teams and the university.”
