WHY WE CARE:
Herrera ran PRs of 8:55 for 3200m and 4:10 for 1600m as a junior last spring, but rose to national prominence this fall when he was one of few who dared to run alongside California state cross country champion Phillip Rocha. Herrera recorded a 14:48 time at Woodward Park and placed fifth overall at NXN for All-American honors. He likes to double: last weekend at the Azusa Meet of Champions, Herrera scored a big mile PR and US No. 3 ranking of 4:04.99, plus took the 3200m title in a US No. 7 time of 9:02.
